Agriculture in Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan is known worldwide as a consistent and reliable supplier of safe, high-quality grains, oil seeds, pulses, livestock, and agri-food products. In 2020, Saskatchewan agriculture exports were the largest on record, with total international sales of $16.9 billion. Agricultural exports have increased more than 65 percent since 2011, accounting for more than 55 percent of total provincial exports in 2020.
In 2020, Saskatchewan exported more than $1.7 billion in each of our four key crop product sectors: cereal grains, oil seeds, pulses, and edible oils.
Canada’s agriculture production is supported by a vast land base, but we have a relatively small population. As a result, our agriculture sector exports most of the products it produces and Canada has become adept at meeting the food and agricultural demands of the world.
Saskatchewan has 18.9 million hectares (46.7 million acres) of cultivated farmland and is home to more than 40 per cent of Canada’s total, making it Canada’s primary growing region for grains, oil seeds and pulses.
