Regina

Named after Queen Victoria in 1882, Regina, which is Latin for “Queen”, is now Saskatchewan’s capital city. Although it’s not the biggest city (Saskatoon is Saskatchewan’s largest city), it’s the cultural and commercial center for Southern Saskatchewan and is located right on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Regina often gets overlooked on many traveler’s itineraries but is home to wonderful museums, historic districts, strong indigenous culture, a vibrant food scene, and of course, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Regina Attraction:

Wascana Lake and Wascana Centre

Wascana Lake, the focal point of Wascana Centre. This beautiful area is a wonderful place to go for a walk, jog, or bike ride, featuring water fountains, bridges, trails, and tree cover.

Wascana Centre is home to some of the best Regina activities, scenery, and is also home to the provincial government.

You can practically spend a couple of days just exploring all the sights around Wascana Centre, and can even take an audio-guided walking tour of the lake and its surrounds.

Provincial Legislative Building

This building was built between 1908 and 1912 and is easily one of the most striking buildings in the city. Both the legislative building and its grounds are designated a National Historic Site of Canada back as well as a Provincial Heritage Property.

Free tours are give daily inside the building, the tour last just 30-minutes and will give you insight into the government of Saskatchewan as well as a sneak peek of the incredible interior.

Royal Saskatchewan Museum

This natural history museum was originally established way back in 1906. The museum was formed to secure and preserve natural history specimens and objects of historical and ethnological interest and received royal patronage from Queen Elizabeth II in 1993.

The museum focuses heavily on Saskatchewan, including its flora, wildlife, insect, fauna, prehistoric history, and the First Nations that have been in Saskatchewan for thousands of years.

Science Centre

The Saskatchewan Science Centre is an interactive science museum located in Wascana Centre of Regina.

In 1991 an expansion of the Science Centre brought the Kramer IMAX Theatre to the City of Regina which provides an amazing 3D IMAX experience. 

A number of special events take place at the Science Centre each year including Adult Science Nights, Ignite! Festival, The After Dark Film Series, Fantasy Food. Additionally, public events such as Canada Day celebrations extend the reach of Science Centre programming.

MacKenzie Art Gallery

The MacKenzie Art Gallery is Saskatchewan’s oldest public art gallery.

The gallery is proud of their diverse and extensive collections on display with their permanent collection spanning 5,000 years of art with nearly 5,000 works. 

The gallery has a number of rotating exhibits on display throughout the year and primarily focuses on art made in Canada and in particular, art made here in Saskatchewan and by indigenous Canadian artists.

Conexus Arts Centre is the home of the Regina Symphony Orchestra and numerous shows, including world-renowned traveling performances.

There are numerous shows every week, from music, comedy, galley and more!

Regina Farmer’s Market

Each Saturday throughout the summer and fall, Regina Farmers’ Market takes place in the heart of downtown, and there’s no better place to get the freshest produce and hand-made goods. 

Street vendors set up at City Square Plaza along 12th street. Vendors sell all types of fresh and preserved foods, including baked goods, local honey, candy, and beverages.
