Crane valley is near many great Saskatchewan sites to explore.

It is located in a small town near Highway 36 and Oro Lake Park.

There are two community pastures for every resident and visitor to enjoy.

Crane Valley Attraction:

Oro Lake

Oro Lake is home to the North-West Mounted Police’s Camp Norris, the Oro Lake Park and a stopover point for officers who patrolled the hills region.

This small lake was formed by the melting glacier and is saltier than the Dead Sea because of its Sodium Sulphate desposits. It is also rich in firebrick clay deposits.

Crane Valley Attraction: The Cactus and Dirt Hills

The Cactus and Dirt Hills are an area created by the glacier that covered Saskatchewan 10,000 to 12, 000 years ago. The hills reach heights of 880 meters in altitude and the entire area encompasses almost 1,000 square kilometers. 

It features some of the highest glacial push hills in the world, and significant historic sites relating to Indigenous culture, the Wood Mountain and Fort Qu’Appelle Trails, Oro Lake, and North West Mounted Police (NWMP) routes to Fort McLeod.

Saskatchewan Birding Trail

Saskatchewan has a wealth of bird-watching opportunities ranging from the fall migration of waterfowl to the spring rush of songbirds and shorebirds. Birding Trail sites offer you a chance to see endangered species such as Piping Plovers, Sage Grouse, Burrowing Owls, and even the Whooping Crane as it stops over in Saskatchewan during its spring and fall migrations.

The extensive grasslands in the valley attract various rare species such as the Ferruginous Hawk, Long-billed Curlew and Loggerhead Shrike, as well as the endangered Burrowing Owl.

Claybank Brick Plant National Historic Site

The Claybank Brick Plant National Historic Site, located near Claybank, Saskatchewan at the foot of the Dirt Hills in the Rural Municipality of Elmsthorpe No. 100, was an operational brick manufacturing plant from 1914–1989. Bricks manufactured at the site have been used to construct prominent Canadian buildings such as the Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon and the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. The site was designated as a National Historic Site in 1996 and remains one of Canada’s greatest examples of early twentieth century industrialism.

Haunted Galilee

Located on Highway 36 roughly 50 km south of Moose Jaw and on the western edge of the Dirt Hills, Galilee is a collection of spooky scattered structures surrounded by the vast prairie landscape. 

What was once a thriving community within Southern Saskatchewan in the early 20th century, now remains as a ghost town where the few remaining buildings of the community can still be observed by onlookers.

Big Muddy Badlands

The Big Muddy badlands are an amazing spectacle of nature’s architecture and conjure up images of outlaws from the “wild west.”

The natural architecture and desert like landscape are unique in the province. There really isn’t anything like the Big Muddy. Rich in history, the Big Muddy area once comprised part of the Outlaw Trail, a system of caves and trails which extended all the way from Canada down to Mexico. Tours are offered during summer of the trails and caves where outlaws like Sam Kelly once walked and sheltered in.

Castle Butte

Situated in the Big Muddy Badlands, Castle Butte is a free standing structure with a circumference of 0.5 km and an elevation of 60 m. A relic from the ice age, ​it was a landmark to the Indigenous people, the North West Mounted Police (NWMP), and early Canadian settlers. The structures composition is made up of sandstone and is clay-based with alkali and coal deposits.

Fishing

Crane Valley is the perfect place to go fishing as it is located near many lakes and rivers.

Saskatchewan is home to more than 100,000 lakes and rivers containing 68 species.

Common Fishes that can be found near Crane Valley Region: Walleye, Rainbow, Pike, and Perch.

Fishing licsence is required, $3 for one-day licences, $4 for three-day licences and $8 for annual licences.
